Trailblazing Sustainability: The Andorra Team's Impact on Circular Economy Practices
Our site in Andorra has joined the circular economy initiative known as the CLOSED LOOP PROJECT, launched by the plastic manufacturing company SPICA. This project, which began in 2021, focuses on recycling waste generated during the production of plastic cards. The waste includes not only virgin PVC (polyvinyl chloride, a synthetic plastic polymer) but also mixed material waste in PVC from skeletons, setup sheets, antennas, and printed sheets.
It’s important to note that our Andorra facility didn’t just start recycling recently; they have been recycling virgin PVC from the very beginning and have successfully collaborated with SPICA for many years. SPICA’s latest initiative enables the effective separation and recycling of mixed material waste in PVC, a process that has only been developed in recent years.
The Andorra site has been a pioneer in collaborating and joining forces with SPICA’s circular economy initiative. The CLOSED LOOP PROJECT facilitates the transformation of mixed material waste in PVC into reusable materials.
‘We expect to have recycled a total of approximately 170 tons of plastic waste by the end of 2024, having already processed 140 tons so far, further reinforcing our commitment to a circular economy. Our joint goal is to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste, minimize resource consumption, and promote responsible manufacturing practices.’
Joan Albert Moseguí, Purchasing Manager, TAG SYSTEMS SAU, member of AUSTRIACARD HOLDINGS

By incorporating circular economy principles, our company and SPICA repurpose plastic waste into new products, effectively ‘closing the loop’ of the products’ linear lifecycle and extending the lifecycle of materials to be used repeatedly in manufacturing.
This approach significantly reduces pollution and the demand for raw resources, supporting global efforts to combat plastic pollution, which is one of the major environmental challenges today.
Our collaborative project aligns with sustainability goals by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption associated with the production of new plastics.
‘We are proud to have a giant in the financial card market joining SPICA close loop offer. Thanks again for our friends in TAG who believe strongly since the beginning in this initiative.’
Marco Balatti: Sales Marketing Manager at SPICA SRL
This initiative underscores our shared belief that businesses can be both economically viable and environmentally responsible, ensuring long-term benefits for both companies and the ecosystem. Our other facilities will also follow the example set by the Andorra site in adopting these practices.
This circular economy model not only enhances our corporate social responsibility but also establishes a new industry benchmark for sustainable practices.
